5 Things to question before you invest in SEO (Part 2)

If you are considering investing in SEO for your business, it’s good to start with asking yourself a few questions.

Start with a plan and in this case your plan is going to go something like this

Do some research around SEO

Ofcourse, you start here. You want to check if some of the things I told you in my previous post above are true. If you’re not already familiar with it, you want to get familiar with the concept so that you can work with a professional confidently. You also remember that someone you know was working in the SEO industry or had gotten SEO work done for their business, you call them and ask them about their point of view. Based on this, you make some conclusions.

It’s not a one size fits all solution. Figure out how you want to use it for your business

Now that you’re clear about the benefits of SEO, start thinking about how you can use it for your business goals. Now, you might want your products to come up when people are searching for something specific, you might want to get found for your reputation, to help build a brand for hiring a team, showcase experiences, reviews etc.  You might have a blog for your website and are already investing in creating content, in that case you might want to distribute your content to the target audience in the hopes of increasing your email list.

Do it yourself/Hire someone to help you with it

You’ve made your goals now, it is time to deceive who’s going to own this. You are well aware that unless there’s someone in charge of planning, executing and analyzing, things don’t work out well. So, there are two ways to go about this, either you do it yourself or hire someone to do it.

You can do it yourself if

  • You are from a marketing background yourself and this is simply an extension to your role as CMO,
  • You don’t have funds to hire who’s going to do quality work or you want to learn the basics yourself before going full on mode. Obviously this is not recommended for all business owners, as business owners should be focussed on all aspects of the business, and getting deep within SEO will not be possible with your full time duties. However, I do encourage you to get the grasp of the basics of SEO and what it can do for you.

If you’re not really interested in getting into the nitty-gritty of SEO and want to keep your focus on the big picture, decide on hiring someone for it. It can be someone in the house, a freelancer, or an agency. How to decide which is what I am going to come to a little later in the article.

Make a plan for this exercise

You are clear on who owns the exercise. Now it’s time to make a plan, do a study of where you stand, what’s the opportunity, what resources are available, and how you plan to reach your goals based on the resources.

This is a research and time-intensive exercise but I suggest that you or whomever you hire to get this done, do this diligently. Without a proper plan, you will simply be going in any which direction and won’t be able to measure the results of your investment, most probably not even get to any specific goal.

Get started with the execution

Armed with the SEO plan, you allot the tasks and you get started. There are as many streams you will be going deep into depending on your type of business and your goals

  • E-commerce SEO
  • Local SEO
  • International SEO
  • Multilingual SEO
  • Insert more types of SEO
